The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks picked up 4.38 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,371.64. On Wednesday:The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.56 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,361.13. The Russell 2000 is up 14.51 points, or 1.1 percent. Energy companies led U.S. stock indexes mostly higher Wednesday as crude oil prices rose. The Russell 2000 is up 17 points, or 1.3 percent.
